Session 2 Group Classes

THEATRE COURSES

  • Youth Fundamentals of Theatre with Mr. Jason Carr (ages 7-12)

$160 for 8 week session

Mon and Wed 4pm to 5pm or Tues and Thurs 12pm to 1pm in the MAC Theater

A class to learn the basics. We will cover voice projection, diction, facial expression, memorization techniques, stage directions, blocking, costumes, and makeup. Students will participate in the recital at the end of each session. Register Here!


  • Technical Theatre 1 with Mr. Jason Carr (ages 12+)

$160 for 8 week session

Tues and Thurs 5pm to 6pm in the MAC Theater

Students will be instructed in light and sound design, set construction, costume and makeup design, and much more. Students will design and build the sets for productions, and be allowed to be a part of the tech crew for productions and for the recital at the end of each term. Register Here!

  • Acting 2 with Mr. Jason Carr (all ages)

$160 for 8 week session

Tues and Thurs 4pm to 5pm in the MAC Theater

Students will memorize, rehearse, and perform solo and ensemble scenes to be performed at the end of the term. This class will have a heavy emphasis on character development. Register Here!

  • Private Acting and Public Speaking Lessons with Mr. Jason Carr (all ages)

$20 per 1 hour session or $160 for 8 week term of 1 lesson per week.

Times will be arranged by student and instructor

Students will receive one-on-one instruction to sharpen their skills, and/or to fine tune material they have prepared for recitals, auditions, performances, etc. Register Here!


  • Stagecraft- ages 12+.

$160 for 8 week session

Mon and Wed 5pm to 6:20pm in the MAC Theater


In this eight week course, students will learn how to design and build sets and scenery for theatrical productions. This

course will require the use of power tools, hand tools, and electrical equipment. Students will need to provide safety glasses

and hearing protection.


  • Light and Sound Design-

$160 for 8 week session

Day and Time to Be Decided


With the assistance of the teacher, students will learn how to operate lighting and sound systems for the purpose of live

performances. Enrollment will include, but not be limited to, helping design the lighting and sound for the current Academy

theatrical production.


  • Makeup for Stage and Screen


$160 for 8 week session

Day and Time to Be Decided


Students will receive instruction on techniques for applying makeup and styling hair for actors/actresses to get them performance ready. Students will need to purchase a makeup palette and hair styling instruments, per the instructors approval. Students will assist with preparing the performers for the current Academy theatrical production.

Incredible surprises await upon each travel destination from djembe drumming to a 15 foot dancing dragon! Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session. Class piano is designed for students who are new to playing the piano. These students will receive knowledge of the instrument, proper posture, hand placement, pedaling, and basic score reading. This class will participate in the recital at the end of the 8-week session.

Group Ukulele Class

  • Community Guitar with Mr. Jake Cantrell (Ages 13 and up)

A performing ensemble to continue studies of the guitar past a beginner level. We will expand on chords to include diads, triads, barre chords and develop power chords beyond a beginning level. We will introduce basic understanding of musical keys and application of scales to improvise solos. We will introduce and apply more advanced techniques involved in lead guitar such as: hammers, pulls, bends, slides, tapping and harmonics to name a few. Material will be drawn from a wide variety of musical styles and genres

Materials needed: *guitar (steel or nylon string or electric with small amplifier) or other related instrument (bass, ukulele, mandolin, other) 3-ring binder, pencil and *digital tuner. Print music will be provided.

  • Advanced Guitar with emphasis in Jazz with Mr. Chris Howard (Ages 14 and up)

Overview: This course is designed as either a follow up to the Beginning Guitar course or for the more experienced player who needs to enhance their technique and overall playing ability. The pace of the course is quick but not overbearing.

Some of the material covered will be:

  1. Notes Beyond the open position of the guitar.

  2. Chords beyond the open position of the guitar.

  3. Major and Minor Scale studies for the entire guitar.

  4. Improvisational Techniques.

  5. Playing and communicating musically within a group setting.

This class requires rudimentary knowledge of the fretboard, treble clef beginning note reading ability and basic chord knowledge. Students must have at least 1 year experience on the guitar to be in this course. The maximum enrollment for this class is 15 students.

Materials needed: guitar (acoustic or electric), pencil and small 3 ring binder. No amps are needed.


  • Beginning Guitar with Mrs. Sherry Francis (Ages 18 and up)

If you are a beginner at guitar and want to develop playing skills and song repertoire, this is the class for you! Students will learn basic chords along with rhythm and strumming patterns to play a wide variety of musical styles from folk, country, gospel and pop. This class is designed for adults who want to start playing simple, fun, and quick to learn tunes! Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.

Pick up your six string and learn how to play basic chords and a variety of songs from traditional hymns to country and pop favorites! Students will learn fundamentals about the guitar, simple chords, how to read and play chord charts and multiple rhythm and strumming patterns. Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.

Wind Instrument Classes

  • Intermediate Level Low Brass (trombone, baritone, tuba) with Mr. Kurt Bauche (Ages 12 and up)

Instruction will include fundamental techniques specific for instruments in the low brass family. Print music will be provided. All instruction will be driven toward improving fundamentals and preparing for the recital at the end of the 8 week session. Students must be proficient on their instrument with at least one full year of experience.

Required materials: *instrument, *maintenance items (grease, oil, etc) folder and pencil. Print music will be provided.

  • Advanced Level Low Brass (trombone, baritone, tuba) with Mr. Kurt Bauche (Ages 14 and up)

Instruction will include fundamental techniques specific for instruments in the low brass family. All instruction will be driven toward improving fundamentals and preparing for the recital at the end of the 8 week session. Extra emphasis will be placed on material for Missouri All-District and All-State Band, and MSHSAA solo/ensemble festival.

  • Adult Beginning Band with Mr. Elliot Naes (ages 18 and up)

This class is intended for adults who are interested in either learning an instrument for the first time or who are interested in learning an instrument after a long break since their last school music instruction. We will cover material from instrument assembly and making the first sounds, to simple folk songs. This class may function on it’s own or as a gateway to join other MAFAA Instrumental classes.

The goal will be for each student to develop a reliable and comfortable embouchure that is efficient and can be built upon for future advancement. Trumpet music rudiments will be covered in all areas of trumpet pedagogy. There will be much one-on-one instruction and help, even within small group sessions adjusting to each student’s needs. Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.

Students must be proficient on their instrument with at least one full year of experience.

Percussion classes

  • Steel Drums with Mr. Doug Berry (Ages High School and Up)

Wednesdays 7-9 pm Register Here!

Steel drums is a class for beginners, veterans, senior adults, and anyone 16 or older. You do not need prior knowledge of the instrument and do not need music reading experience to enjoy this class. We will provide you with the necessary tools, lessons, and even instruments to learn to play or increase your abilities.

Instructor Doug Berry has taught steel drums since 2010 at the college/higher education level. We will work with the pace of the class and perform at the end of 8 weeks.

  • Bucket Drumming with Mrs. Sherry Francis (Ages 12-18)

Students will play multiple rhythms, timbres and tempos on buckets of various sizes and materials with drumsticks and mallets! Bucket drumming, or sometimes known as “street drumming” is intensely interactive and fun! It is full of percussive sounds and creative music arrangements that really rock to the beat! Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.

  • Percussion Ensemble with Mr. Joe Strobl (Ages High School and Up)

Tuesdays and Thursdays 5 pm-6:30 pm Register Here!

*This class is held in the Farmington High School Band Room and will meet for 90 minutes twice weekly.

The MAFAA Percussion Ensemble is intended for the advanced High School percussionist who would like to perform upper level percussion ensemble literature.

Required materials: All materials will be provided. Personal sticks and mallets are recommended.




Miscellaneous

  • Beginning Improvisation with Mr. Dennis Mayberry (Ages 12 and up)

This class will explore the basic mechanics of improvising. We will explore the most often used keys used for improvisation and various forms of those keys. A basic understanding and willingness to compose music on the spot is a must. Ear training exercises will help you identify forms and your reaction to those forms. We will explore various scales and modes that can be used to be a successful solo artist. Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.

Students must be proficient on their instrument with at least one full year of experience.

  • Music Theory with Dr. Kevin White(Ages 12 and up)

This class will adjust itself to the knowledge of the individuals/group every 8-week session. Music theory will first cover all fundamentals that are involved and applicable in every style of music (keys, scales, clefs, rhythms, notation, etc.). From that point instruction would move forward to how harmony and chords work and are utilized by composers/songwriters within their music.


  • Reading All Chord Symbols with Dr. Kevin White (Ages 16 and up)

Wednesdays at 6pm Register Here!

Students will learn how to construct every conceivable modern chord symbol and how to apply each from any starting point. All major key signatures will be taught as part of this method. The course will also offer instruction on which notes of the chord can be deleted and still achieve the color of the chord for piano, guitar, and vibraphone voicings. Students will be instructed on how to create their own accompaniments. Beginners are welcome! Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.



Vocal Classes

$120 for the 8-week session


  • Beginning Voice with Mr. Isaac Hallock (Ages 12 and up)

Tuesdays at 5pm Register Here!

Beginning Voice is designed to give students aged 12 and up an introduction into the world of singing.Students will learn how to develop proper singing techniques ranging from breathing, range/passagio, singing with dynamics and telling the story. This class will participate in the recital at the end of the 8-week session.

Materials needed: Students will be required to purchase their individual song selections (once assigned by the instructor), 3-ring binder, # 2 pencil, and a score friendly eraser.



  • Children’s Choir with Mrs. Amanda Dement (Ages 7-14)

Thursdays at 4pm Register Here!

This vocal ensemble is for girls and boys ages 7-14. We will focus on vocal technique and what it takes to be a good vocalist. We will sing unison, 2 and 3 part songs. There will be a focus on canon style singing as well. Students in this class will participate in the recital at the end of the session.




Large Ensembles

$20 for the 8-week session for non-members

  • Community Band with Mr. Dan Schunks (Ages 14 and up)

Mondays at 7pm

A community concert band for musicians of a High School level and above. This group will meet weekly in the MAC Band Room from 7-9 pm. The repertoire will include a variety of styles and span a wide range of difficulty as we rehearse to prepare music for a fall concert, winter concert and spring concert.


  • MAC Singers with Mrs. Sherry Francis (College-for credit)

Monday-Wednesday-Friday at 11AM

MAC Singers perform a variety of music styles from exhilarating spirituals to modern classics and everything in between! MAC Singers has planned concerts, community performance events, choir team building activities, socials, traveling and so much more! The class is open for anyone who loves to sing and college course credit will apply to any degree program.

  • Community Jazz Ensemble (Ages 16 and up) with Mr. Dobie Carroll

Tuesdays at 7pm

A full-size, jazz big band that will rehearse a specific concert repertoire, every 8-weeks and conclude with a public concert at the end of each session. This ensemble was originally geared to high school/.college students, but is open to all in the community of any age (must have a high school level degree of playing ability). The Big Band would consist of Alto Saxes, Tenor Saxes, Bari Sax, Trumpets, Trombones, Piano, Bass, Guitar, VIbraphone, Drums, Auxiliary Percussion and Vocalist(s). This class is offered through the mineral Area Music Academy or if you wish to have college credit, through Mineral Area College.


  • Community Singers with Mrs. Sherry Francis (High School and UP)

Thursday's at 7pm

A dynamic, non-auditioned choral ensemble comprised of college students, high school students and singers from the community. Community Singers perform a variety of music styles with concerts every 8 weeks and community performance events! This season, Community Singers will present the ever-popular Magnificat by John Rutter and the traditional classic, Handel’s Messiah.
